A Solid Backup Plan

Fish for Trout

It’s been a windy month so far. Grouper is the hot bite right now, but the option to fish in the deeper water of the bay has been dictated by the constant gusty conditions, which basically meant I didn’t do too much grouper fishing. As with life and fishing, there should always be a backup plan.

The other hot bite has been and remains to be the speckled trout. Bigger trout have been on ice in the cooler at the end of almost every trip. It’s not like were just pulling up to any grass flat and catching fish, but when the right pothole is found, the bite is usually good. Fishing mainly mid to lower tides, we scout numerous areas looking for potholes, or if the water is clear enough, pods of fish. The trout have been taking jigs, plugs and live bait. Chumming them up with whitebait usually gets the action going, and is my favorite way to entice them to the boat. Besides trout, you never know what you might hook on the grass flats; the occasional redfish or mackerel gets thrown in the mix, along with jacks, ladyfish and bluefish. Even with the wind, it’s still easy to have fun on the water, and it beats yard work.
